Why Breck is the Perfect Spot for a Family-Friendly Ski Trip
Families flock to Breckenridge, or as the locals fondly call it “Breck.” The reasons are simple. It’s a real Western town with a rich history, friendly locals and a welcoming, laid-back attitude.
The best part is that your kids won’t be bored. There’s just too much to do. And, they might even forget about their fidget spinners, tablets, smart phones and video games for a few days and want to spend quality time with you on the chairlift or sipping hot cocoa in front of the roaring fireplace.
Here’s our reasons of why Breck is perfect for families, along with tips to help you experience a hassle-free, fun and meaningful winter family trip to the Rocky Mountains.
A Real Western Town
Breck is a real town with a history rooted in gold mining. Main Street is lined with colorful Victorian buildings that house family-owned boutiques, a funky used book store, a lively toy store, candy stores, coffee shops and top-notch restaurants. Strolling down Main Street is one of the most popular activities because of the shopping, window shopping and people watching, Make time for a few pit stops along the way, including our favorites – Crepes a la Cart, Mountain Top Cookie Shop and Peek-A-Boo Toy Store.
If you’re looking for an interesting and educational option, sign up for a historic walking tour through the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance. The Welcome Center is a treasure trove of information, maps and recommendations. Plus, they have public restrooms right in the heart of downtown. (203 S. Main Street)
Off-Mountain Fun and Activities
Breck offers enough outdoor activities and other options to keep everyone in the family happy. Sure there’s world-class skiing and snowboarding, but there’s so much more: ice skating, dog sledding, snowshoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing, winter fly fishing, indoor pools, a children’s museum, art classes. We love taking a class through BreckCreate and making a souvenir to take home. Our family also makes time for some good old-fashioned fun at the Carter Park sledding hill. It’s a good workout for everyone in the family and the best part – it’s free. Other family favorite activities include a trip to the Mountaintop Children’s Museum and swimming and rock climbing at the Breckenridge Recreation Center.
One of the Best Kids Ski & Snowboard Schools
Breckenridge Ski Resort is one of the top resorts in the world because of the variety of its terrain, as well as the reputation for its Ski and Snowboard School. Their kids program is one of the best and they even have a castle at their Peak 8 base area for the kiddos.
We recommend signing up for a private lesson if you’re looking to splurge and want the one-on-one attention, book a half-day family private lesson. If you pay online, you’ll get a discount. If your whole family takes the lesson, it actually works out to be the best value.
Or, enroll your kiddos in a group lesson with children their own age and watch them soar. We highly recommend the Ultimate 4 group lesson, that guarantees a small group atmosphere with only four students per class, and sometimes you’ll get less kids for a better instructor-per-kid ratio.
The instructors are trained to help your child progress at their own pace and have fun in the process. Find out more: https://www.breckenridge.com/plan-your-trip/ski-and-ride-lessons/category/child.aspx
Lodging options for a family
Breck has a wide variety of lodging options, especially for families. We love renting a condo or house in Breckenridge that comes with a fully-equipped kitchen, spacious living room and roaring fireplace. That way, we can cook family dinners at our home away from home, play games or cards with the whole family and end the day with hot chocolate in front of the fireplace.
We also plan for a family movie night and make some popcorn, log onto Netflix (or bring a DVD or rent one at City Market in town) and sit back and enjoy the show. Many condos, cabins and houses are conveniently located in town or close to the slopes.
