Outdoor Apparel

People come to Breckenridge to play outside, which means you need to dress appropriately.  Breckenridge might be a town that is a little obsessed with outdoor gear.

If you’re not prepared, the good thing is there are plenty of shops that are happy to cater to serve locals and tourists alike.

Let’s start with the basics, layers!

Layers of synthetic and/or wool fabrics, rather than a single heavy layer, are far more effective at regulating your body temperature. You can add or remove layers to stay comfortable in changing conditions or activity levels.

Here are some basics on what to bring that will help you stay comfortable in every season, from proper layers, proper footwear, eyewear, and extras.

For fall, winter and early spring, have a base layer next to the skin, a thick fuzzy middle layer, and an outer waterproof/windproof (breathable) coat or shell (and even over-pants). Your outer shell is an important protection against wind, rain, snow and cold.

Choosing the proper footwear in Colorado is important as well, remember choose comfort over fashion. Wear shoes that can cover mileage — whether it’s hiking, rafting, biking or perusing art galleries.

And unless you enjoy squinting, a good pair of sunglasses is a necessity.  Colorado is known for its more than 300 days of sunshine and peaks reaching higher than 14,000 feet or fourteeners (we’ve got 58 of them!), but when you combine those together, you need some serious eye protection; whether that is by means of sunglasses, hats or goggles.

Here are some helpful suggestions for packing or a helpful shopping list for when you arrive in Breckenridge for your vacation.

Winter: Fleece jacket, long underwear, water-resistant coat, jeans and snow pants.  For shoes, waterproof shoes or boots are a must and cozy après-ski slippers are a bonus.

Summer/Spring/Fall: T-shirts, rain jacket, light fleece, light jacket, jeans and shorts hiking pants, swimsuit and warm clothing for camping.  Your footwear should be hiking boots (or sturdy shoes), athletic shoes, comfortable sandals and shoes that can get wet.

Half the fun of vacationing is going shopping, so if you don’t have room in your suitcase for any of this gear, no need to worry, here are a few recommendations on several Breckenridge retailers that will happily help get you set up with everything you need.
