Five Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Breck

If you’re looking for a guaranteed white Christmas, Breckenridge should be at the top of your wish list for Santa. Located at 9,600 feet above sea level, Breckenridge always has snow-capped peaks at Christmastime and plenty of cheer and events. If you still haven’t found a place to stay during your visit to Breckenridge this holiday season just search our available ski lodging.

Here are five reasons to celebrate the holidays in Breckenridge:

It’s a winter wonderland

Breckenridge looks like a life-sized snow globe. The town’s Victorian-style Main Street is charming, but add the backdrop of the Ten Mile Range and Breckenridge Ski Resort’s world-class ski slopes and you’ve got all the elements for a Norman Rockwell painting of the perfect Colorado ski town. During the holidays, the town really shines. Actually, it glows with holiday lights and decorations.

You can bring some of the wonder into your vacation rental and order a Christmas tree and holiday decorations to be set up for you through Summit Home Services.

Magical events for kids of all ages

There’s seemingly a little bit of magic sprinkled over every event in December. From the Race of the Santas to the Lighting of Breckenridge, the town offers festive cheer for every kid, big and small. Christmas kicks off the first weekend of December with the Lighting of Breckenridge featuring a dog parade, the Race of the Santas, caroling and the real Santa leading the ceremony to flip the switch on the holiday lights in town. Don’t miss the Handmade Holiday market at the Breckenridge Arts District, BreckCreate’s unique holiday events (like the Unsilent Night in 2017) or the opportunity to skate with Santa at the Stephen C. West ice arena.

Gifts that keep on giving

Unlike other ski towns, Breckenridge offers a lot more variety of art exhibits, classes and workshops. Thanks to funding from the town for BreckCreate’s programming and events and the designation of the Breckenridge Arts District as one of Colorado’s creative districts, you have dozens, if not hundreds of opportunities to make your own gifts through the tin shop, the potter’s studio, the photography classes, the maker’s nights, the painting workshops. Check out the BreckCreate schedule to give yourself the gift of a new skill. Or, give someone else the gift of a class, workshop or a handmade token of your love and holiday spirit.

Here comes Santa, hundreds of them

One Santa is magical, so imagine what hundreds of Santas, elves, reindeer and jolly folks can do for your holiday spirit? Breckenridge has a festive tradition of hosting a race the first weekend of December where hundreds of costume-clad holiday revelers sprint, walk or prance down Main Street for the Race of the Santas while thousands cheer. The six-block race serves cold milk, cookies and holiday treats at the aid stations. Four-legged friends can get into the festive spirit with their own holiday parade at Main Street Station earlier in the day.

Afterwards, the racers – two-legged and four-legged – join merry locals, festive visitors and local dignitaries to unveil the holiday lights in town. The festivities take place on the Blue River Plaza in the heart of downtown with carolers and visits with Santa. Don’t worry if you don’t have a Santa suit, you can get one when you register (if you do it early enough) or grab some reindeer antlers or other festive attire at one of Breck’s shops and prance your way down Santa Claus lane for the race.

You, too, can ride a sleigh or sled

Riding a sleigh or sled over the river and through the woods is another popular activity for the holidays and Breck has you covered for horse-drawn sleigh rides, dog sledding and old-fashioned sledding hills. We love dog sledding with Good Times Adventures (or snowmobiling), sledding at Carter Park, but our favorite holiday activity is a sleigh ride in Breck. The Golden Horseshoe Tour Co. offers scenic sleigh rides and dinner sleigh rides with a theatrical show, as well.
