Breck is the Place to Be for Winter Events

There’s one thing that Breckenridge knows how to do – roll out the welcome mat and throw a party. The historic town known for its world-class skiing and snowboarding is also known for its world-class events like Ullr Fest and the International Snow Sculpture Championships. If you’re looking to amp up your Breckenridge vacation, plan your trip during one of these festive events.

Race of the Santas and the Lighting of Breckenridge: December

The holiday season doesn’t officially start in Breckenridge until the first weekend of December when hundreds of Santas, elves, reindeer and jolly racers sprint, walk or prance down Main Street for the Race of the Santas. In true holiday fashion, the six-block race serves cold milk, cookies and holiday treats at the aid stations while thousands line Main Street to cheer on the racers and ring in the holiday cheer. Four-legged friends can get into the festive spirit with their own holiday parade at Main Street Station.

Afterwards, the racers join merry locals, festive visitors and local dignitaries to unveil the holiday lights in town. The festivities take place on the Blue River Plaza in the heart of downtown with carolers and visits with Santa.

Dew Tour: December

The best skiers and snowboarders converge on Breckenridge every December to compete in the pipe and slopestyle on the mountain and to showcase their skills in the popular streetstyle night-time event that happens in downtown Breck as part of the popular Dew Tour.

The Dew Tour is recognized as one of the top skiing and snowboarding competitions in the world and is often a qualifier for the Olympics. You can see the action up close at Breck’s famed Freeway Terrain Park on Peak 8 or downtown. Check out the night-time scene at Breck’s bars and you’ll probably bump into a few Olympians or potential Olympians.

Ullr Fest: January

Breck loves winter so much that it celebrates and honors Ullr (pronounced like ruler but drop the r, so it comes out as “ooh-ler”), the Norse god of snow, with an action-packed festival, including the rowdy Ullr Fest parade, the World Record attempt for the longest shot ski, a town bonfire and Viking helmets galore.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, jump head first or feet first or canon ball into the icy waters at the Ullr Ice Plunge. If you’d rather stay warm and dry, check out the talent show, comedy night and film festival. Don’t miss the kids activities and, of course, Ullr, himself. Get your horned Ullr helmet and join one of the most unique winter festivals in the world.

International Snow Sculpture Championships: January

Another way Breckenridge celebrates its love of snow is by hosting the International Snow Sculpture Championships. Teams from around the world gather in Breck every January to chip, sculpt and shape works of art made out of snow right in the middle of downtown Breckenridge.

Judges vote for the winners. You can join in and choose your favorite with the People’s Choice Vote. Stop by the Riverwalk Center’s headquarters for more information. Even the littlest artist can get in the spirit with the Junior Snow Sculpture event at Main Street Station.
